Football Queensland have launched new after school football programs for young girls, in an effort to further lift participation numbers in the state.
The state governing body has partnered with A-League side Brisbane Roar and five other local clubs in FQ Metro North and South, to deliver the MiniRoos Kick-Off After School programs.
The programs are scheduled for girls who are enrolled in Prep to Grade 3 – in February and March of 2022.
FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci stated that clubs will work with FQ, the Brisbane Roar and local schools to engage a whole range of new participants to develop a love for the world game.
“Football is Queensland’s most popular team sport and these MiniRoos Kick-Off After School programs will ensure that girls have a pathway to join their local club,” Cavallucci said.
“Our staff will work in schools in the Ipswich, Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Logan local government areas alongside coaches from several local clubs.
“This will ensure that girls have a familiar face as they transition from school to club football, helping them to feel comfortable and welcome in a new environment.
“Over the past 12 months we have seen an incredible 71 per cent increase in women and girls’ participation in Queensland.
“These programs are part of several initiatives to support female participation ahead of the 2023 Women’s World Cup as we work towards achieving a 50-50 gender participation split by 2027.”
The girls who participate in the programs will receive a free ticket to a Brisbane Roar Liberty A-League Women’s game and a participant pack which includes Brisbane Roar merchandise.
