DAZN and Sky lead the race for Serie A rights

Serie A is still on the hunt for a media rights partner, as DAZN and Sky put in offers for Italy's top-flight league.

Serie A is still on the hunt for a media rights partner, as DAZN and Sky put in offers for Italy’s top-flight league.

A new broadcast rights agreement is yet to be solved, as Serie A wants €1.15 billion (2.13 billion AUD) a year for the 2021-2024 cycle.

A report by Reuters has stated that digital sports media company DAZN’s offer of €850 million (1.3 billion AUD) has nudged pay-TV network Sky’s reported bid of €750 million (1.2 billion AUD). DAZN would be able to broadcast all matches of the Serie A via its streaming app, while Sky would show games on a variety of platforms.

However, with the Serie A seeking an extra 18% on their current arrangement, it means both companies have failed to reach the minimum target of €1.15 billion (2.13 billion AUD) per season.

It was reported last week that Mediapro and Discovery were the two other bidders who put their hands up, alongside DAZN and Sky. Talks are still continuing between all parties about what to do next.

Reuters has also reported that Serie A could combine DAZN and Sky’s bid to raise the value to the ideal target, if both organisations aren’t able to significantly increase their individual offers.

Sky is aiming to make a bigger presence in Italian football, as they already acquired rights for the UEFA Champions League in the nation lasting three years until the end of the 2023/2024 season.

The terms of the contract mean that Sky will show 121 of the 137 matches per season from Europe’s elite club competition. The deal also covers all 282 matches per season from the UEFA Europa League and the new UEFA Europa Conference League.

The remaining 16 Champions League games per season were taken by Amazon in December, to be shown on its Prime Video streaming platform.

WA announce TV series for Sam Kerr’s children’s novels

A new TV series based on Sam Kerr’s children’s books ‘Kicking Goals’ is set to begin filming in early 2027 in Western Australia.

The show follows a young Kerr before she became captain of the Matildas and a star at Chelsea FC. Set in her home state of WA, the story sees her navigate her way through growing up and chasing her dreams, alongside her family and friends, and the adventures that entailed.

Speaking to Screenwest, Kerr said, ‘It’s pretty surreal knowing that Kicking Goals is being adapted into a TV series. These stories are all about believing in yourself and having a go, so it feels really special that a whole new generation will get to experience them on screen.’

Co-authored by Fiona Harris, the books have been a success since their initial release in 2021, a period which has coincided with Kerr and her Matildas teammates growing from beloved within Australia’s football community, into a team of genuine national appeal and recognition. They are available nation-wide, sold at major retailers such as Big W and Dymocks.

The television adaptation will beproduced by Orange Entertainment for Paramount+.

‘Kicking Goals’ is set to inject AUD 5million into the WA economy and provide over 130 local jobs.

Creative Industries Minister of WA, Simone McGurk, said via WA GOV, ‘The series will showcase all that Western Australia has to offer – including our world-class talent, crew, and diverse locations – while celebrating the story of one of our sporting greats.’

Casting is currently underway, with a search for a young Kerr and her mates ongoing.

The months after the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australian and New Zealand saw an 11% increase in women and girl’s participation in football compared to the previous year, showing the direct impact the biggest stage can have on grassroots football.

Kerr has managed to build on that success and begin a new chapter, inspiring kids both on and off the field.
