Premier League club Arsenal is planning a major upgrade in Emirates Stadium this year, with investments forming a key part of the refurbishment.
The Telegraph reports that discussions are currently ongoing over an expensive renovation of the stadium’s big screen. Other areas of focus are to include roof repairs and upgraded turnstile readers, as well as the replacement of club crests and banners around the stadium.
The Emirates, opened in 2006 with a capacity of 60,000, is set to receive upgrades over the coming months and during the off-season in the UK summer. Arsenal has not confirmed details of the plans but chief executive Vinai Venkatesham met with fan groups on Tuesday.
This thought of an upgrade comes as Emirates is no longer the largest venue in London, following the opening of the 62,000-seat Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019.
Fellow Premier League clubs Manchester United and Liverpool are in the process of upgrading their Old Trafford and Anfield stadiums respectively, while Chelsea completed a number of renovation projects at Stamford Bridge ahead of the new season.
United announced in December that initial meetings had taken place between the club and a number of architectural and engineering companies over plans to modernise Old Trafford.
Liverpool broke ground on an expansion project for its Anfield Road Stand in September. The redevelopment of the stand will add 7,000 more seats to Anfield, taking its overall capacity to more than 61,000.
The Emirates opened as a COVID-19 vaccination centre last summer after Arsenal teamed up with the NHS and Islington Council.
