Football South Australia (SA) and SA Police (SAPOL) are beginning a new relationship that seeks to encourage interaction with multicultural groups and support SAPOL’s ongoing hiring drive.
As a place where families, friends, and communities come together for similar reasons, sport is where South Australia Police has identified this partnership as an excellent opportunity to engage with the South Australian community. SAPOL now has the chance to engage with a sizable sporting community.
With a 15% increase in participation since 2021, Football SA today boasts just under 100,000 players, coaches, referees, and volunteers. There are 305 registered outdoor clubs in South Australia, and players of all ages—from young children to masters—combine with a mix of male and female involvement. Along with being significantly involved in school-age participation programmes, Football SA is also actively interested in diversity and inclusion initiatives around the state.
The South Australian Police have participated in Football SA events for a number of years, engaging with spectators and the general public while maintaining a presence. The Africa Nations Cup, which had more than 20 teams participating over two weekends and more than 7000 spectators at the Grand Final, was attended by SA Police in 2022. Over 20 different African countries sent players and spectators to this tournament, which gave SA Police a wonderful chance to interact with the many cultures who call South Australia home.
SAPOL’s Acting Commissioner Linda Williams said via press release:
“With the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup being held in Australia in July 2023, all eyes will be on the world game, and this gives an excellent opportunity for the SA Police to partner with Football SA and engage with the thousands of people that will be coming into SA and visiting from regional areas at this time,” she said.
Minister for Police Joe Szakacs welcomed this outstanding initiative acknowledging SAPOL’s introduction of the new partnership with the community based Football SA, adding via media release:
“This partnership will mean thousands more people will have direct engagement with SAPOL which will go leaps and bounds to encouraging soccer players across the state to choose a career in policing,” he said,
SAPOL will continue to engage with local communities as the FIFA Women’s World Cup continues its already strong momentum.
