What 5G can offer for stadiums

An initiative by the German Football League (Bundesliga) is an advancement that could make its way down to Australia very soon. Once it’s rolled out, the 5G network will improve the match day experience for games across the country.

It’s already taken effect for the German Football League (Bundesliga), partnering up with telecommunications company Vodafone who will provide 5G coverage for club stadiums across the German top flight.

The two-year deal begins from the start of the 2019/20 season and many features will be rolled out for spectators. An augmented reality (AR) app will be launched which aims to deliver immediate coverage by relaying information without buffering or connectivity issues.

The purpose of AR is to supply detailed information that wasn’t available at games previously, including new performance data such as player sprint speeds.

There has been plenty of pre-planning in order to get this up and running, with information gathered from approximately 1,600 games and 3.6 million position points surveyed by the Bundesliga during matches.

That data is able to be presented in a user-friendly format, capturing live graphics, statistics and analysis.

VfL Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena will be the first Bundesliga stadium equipped with the 5G network technology.

The way the Bundesliga is using 5G to improve match-day coverage is a step in the right direction to boost the overall fan experience.

As technology advancements continue to happen in Australia and around the world, those respective leagues will also be looking at the positive impact that 5G can have with faster connection speeds.
