Melbourne City FC intends to field teams in both the NPL women’s and U20 competitions from the 2026 season onwards.
This will be a groundbreaking milestone, marking the club’s first-ever women’s academy. This initiative will allow young women to represent Melbourne City from grassroots through to the highest level of female competition.
In addition, the academy will provide a more defined pathway for aspiring Matildas.
It will also expand on the club’s growing list of national team debutants, which includes Holly McNamara, Leah Davidson, Laura Hughes and Alexia Apostolakis.
Once established, the academy will operate from the City Football Academy in Casey Fields.
This will present players with access to the same top-tier facilities and elite training environment as the club’s A-League women’s and men’s squads.
Melbourne City CEO, Brad Rowse, spoke about the club’s commitment to women’s football and how this academy will reflect that commitment.
“This is a historic moment for our Club and one we are incredibly proud of. Since day one, Melbourne City has been committed to raising the bar for women’s football in Australia, and the launch of a Women’s Academy is the next step in that journey,” he said via press release.
Recently, the club introduced the Melbourne City Football School which aims to improve the confidence and skill levels of children aged 5-14.
The establishment of a women’s academy will serve as a bridge between the Football School and the A-League women’s team.
It will replicate the successful developmental model used for the men’s side.
“By creating a clear pathway from grassroots to elite, we can now provide young female players with the same opportunities their male counterparts have enjoyed for years. This is about investing in the future of the women’s game, and we’re excited to help nurture the next generation of City stars,” Rowse continued.
Following the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, young Australian women are more passionate about the sport than ever.
The introduction of Melbourne City’s NPLW and U20 sides will provide these enthusiastic women with the opportunity to play, develop and compete at the highest level.
Overall, the academy will play a vital role in strengthening the women’s football landscape in Victoria.
